Situated at the edge of the Hantam Karoo, Bushmanland and Namaqualand, Loeriesfontein is an isolated yet atmospheric village situated in a fold of hills on the northern slopes of the Skurweberg. The town grew around a trading store established in 1894, however given its isolation grew very slowly and was only declared a municipality in 1958. (extract from Karoo South Africa)
The farmers have had 25mm’s of rain in 3 years; many have given up and left their farms because living has become intolerable. Yet there are many brave, courageous and large-hearted people living in Loeriesfontein. Desertification is expanding, fossil fuels fuel climate change; how much is climate change contributing the the drought? I don’t know, but I feel for the farmers and their livestock. Farms that have been in the family for generations are having the very life-blood baked out of them by the relentless drought.
So I am stirred – it is my hope that the painting will be sold as 100% of the proceeds of the sale will be donated to the van der Westhuizen’s. Alternatively you can make a donation via Backabuddy at https://www.backabuddy.co.za/chrismari-van-der-westhuizen-batt
