I loved doing this painting of two old men asleep on deckchairs at the beach.
This is a painting exploring further the theme of ageing. The men are draped over the deckchairs as if they have been washed, cleaned out after all their years of labour, and are now draped over the deckchairs to dry out. Their bodies become fragmented, deconstructing, disappearing and fusing into the environment. Surely their lives have greater significance.
On the other hand, they feel they deserve their “drying out” time. They’ve worked hard for this time, they’ve worn out their lives to be able to earn the right to “dry out”!
