This is a painting of Susan, my wife of 38 years (39 years in April 2021). Sue is a rescuer of the unborn, and a facilitator of healing for many moms and moms to be; she counsels women who find themselves in a pregnancy crisis – pregnant, more than often very young and in dire straits. The stories of these women is heart-wrenching at the best of times. Many children walking on the face of the earth are there because of the love and care that Sue, and her team, brings to the lives of their mothers, rescued from the brutality of an abortion, or abandonment in a lonely dark place, or even dropped into an open latrine.
The great challenge of this painting was to employ a softness and sensitivity of brushstroke to the work to effectively portray the true nature and character of Sue, and her work. The flowers on her shirt have in a couple of places been transformed into embryos representing some of the children impacted by Sue’s work.
